Last night I received a fundraising email from the Charlie Brown for Congress campaign stating that 15% of online donations will go to the Sacramento - Sierra Red Cross to help the victims of the Angora fire in South Lake Tahoe (which is in California's 4th congressional district). Now, for those of you who don't know it, Charlie Brown has done something similar before. At the end of the previous fundraising quarter in March he pledged to give 10% of contributions to local veteran aide groups. The donations were distributed to the Sacramento Stand Down, Nevada County Stand Down, and Sierra College Veterans Club in mid April.

Excuses, Excuses

When I have been in town, I have spent a great deal of time coordinating media inquiries and responding to disasters or potential disasters. We had a large apartment fire in the Greenville area recently. The fire displaced 50 people, destroying 30 apartments. Since most disasters happen in the middle of the night, I had to respond to media calls beginning at midnight and conducted interviews beginning at 2:45 a.m. The positive is that no one was hurt and all of the victims received assistance from the Red Cross in various forms based on their disaster-caused needs. Here's an article from the local rag, the Greenville News We also recently had to eliminate a 15 year program due to high cost, lower than average donations (totaling a 30 percent reduction) in revenue, and the fact that the director of the program left the Red Cross. One employee of the program who lost her job contacted several media outlets regarding the program cut, so the CEO and I have spent the better part of the last two days mitigating the situation. Believe me, reporters have no hesitation calling after my business day is done! Here is an article that was written in the Greenville News after the story "broke." Thankfully, when I got a call from the local NBC affiliate Assignment Editor, she felt it was a non-issue. Usually, my reward for doing a good job is more work. That's certainly the case now. I have recently become a Public Affairs Instructor/Trainer for the National American Red Cross. What that means is that I could receive a request to teach Public Affairs anywhere in the nation and U.S. Territories. Now, I need to find organizations that grant funds to non-profits to be used for the purchase of electronic equipment for training. It is better for me that I have the equipment on hand to take with me instead of requesting it from our National office and not know how to use the equipment. Anyway, I will do better at posting again. Especially now that my travel schedule has settled down.

The Real Sporer
Congratulations are due the Real life spouse, Jo Ellen Hill, for election to the Board of the Central Iowa Red Cross Chapter. As all who know her can confirm, Jo is a dynamo of ideas and project energy who likes to help people. So congratulations to the Red Cross for a great new member.

Today was a better day

I picked up an award at work today. After Hurricane Rita, I joined thousands of others and went to the Red Cross to volunteer. They never mobilized me, but ironically I was quickly pulled into a number of Hurricane Relief-related projects at work. Last summer I was informed that I would be receiving an award for that; today in a staff meeting they gave it to me. It was nice to be able to contribute even when I didn't get to volunteer. That one is going on the wall, and I'll look at it with some pride.

A vital skill that is perhaps sometimes overlooked in some martial arts syllabi is First Aid. I recommend that everyone participating in martial arts classes obtain and maintain a First Aid and CPR certification equivalent to either American Heart Association or Red Cross standards. At the very minimum, these certifications should be prerequisite to black belt rank or teaching functions in a club.

Teach the young.At a meeting with the red cross recently, one of the red cross workers discussed the benefits of teenagers that learned to give swim lessons and got certified to baby sit. They can run their own schedule, make more per hour than fast food, and then there is the additional benefit of personal growth. Leadership and growing those younger than you can create great personal benefits to those serving. Confidence is a huge benefit that comes with leadership… but it also gives you a sense of the big picture. And the big picture is larger than your own self (selfishness). So if you have a choice between coaxing your child into fast food service or swim lessons/ babysitting. Pick the latter. The kids that we have worked with this summer on swim team will develop into great managers/leaders/teachers. They have learned to work as a team. Develop personalities outside themselves. Challenge others for improvement and deal with other’s selfishness and immaturity. I can only hope that much for your teens / tweens. I think it is more than most parents could teach.

It is a regular occurrence for Leslie Runnels-Stover, head water safety instructor for the Central Panhandle Chapter of the American Red Cross. On Tuesday afternoon, Runnels-Stover, 38, was directing aquatic traffic for the start of another day in the Red Cross’ Learn-to-Swim program at the Mosley High School pool.
The two-week lessons, which started in May, are an hour each day Tuesday through Friday. Runnels-Stover has been teaching swimming lessons in the Bay County area for three years. Even though she has summer help from local high school and college students, Runnels-Stover still gets her feet wet with her students.
“I always get in,” she said Tuesday afternoon. “I wouldn’t miss it.”
